Pathways Working Paper 00-01 Moen, P. & Erickson, M. A. (2000, February). Social Integration in Different Housing Arrangements.

Phyllis Moen, Cornell University

Mary Ann Erickson, Ithaca College

Objectives

To examine variations in both objective and subjective social integration by comparing four groups: community residents, recent movers to a continuing-care retirement community, recent movers to senior housing, and long-term residents of senior housing.

Key Findings

  • Recent movers to the CCRC are the most likely to engage in clubs or volunteer work, while recent movers to senior housing are the least likely to volunteer or belong to clubs.
  • Recent movers to the CCRC and long-term residents of senior housing tend to have more role involvements, controlling for other factors.
  • Recent movers to senior housing feel less socially integrated than other groups, controlling for other factors.

Implications

In terms of structural and psychological integration, residents of congregate housing have an advantage over people living in their own homes in the community. However, recent movers to senior housing may need a period of several years to establish social networks.
