Pathways Working Paper #00-11 Krout, J.A., Holmes, H.H., Wolle, S. (2000 November). Anticipated Living Arrangements of Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

John A. Krout, Ithaca College

Heidi H. Holmes, Ithaca College

Sarah Wolle, Ithaca College

Objectives

To examine the anticipated living arrangements of community-dwelling older adults of a semi-rural upstate New York county using Pathways to Life Quality study data.

Key findings

    • Aging in place, either with or without home modifications, was the foremost future anticipated living arrangement.
    • Those who are considering a move are more likely to consider a
retirement community rather than moving closer to or in with
      relatives.
    • Surprisingly, the majority of predictive factors proposed in the extant literature were not effective in predicting anticipated living arrangements.

Implications

Factors that can be predictive of an ability to successfully age in place, such as, better health, higher income, neighborhood integration & social support, were not significant in predicting intent to age in place.
