Pathways Working Paper 00-02 Beissner, K., Collins, J. E. & Holmes, H. (2000, March). Extremity Strength and Range of Motion as Predictors of Function in Older Adults.

Katherine L. Beissner, Ithaca College

Jennifer E. Collins, Ithaca College

Heidi Holmes, Ithaca College

Objectives

To identify the extremity musculoskeletal impairments that best predict functional limitations in older adults, and to assess the validity of the physical performance test (PPT) as a predictor of disability.

Key Findings

Age, lower extremity strength and lower extremity range of motion explain 77% of variance in function. Results differ by living situation.

Implications

Extremity musculoskeletal impairments have a strong relationship to function, especially in older adults living in dependent care settings.
