Pathways Working Paper 00-03 Heisler, E., Evans, G. E. & Moen, P. (2000, March). Health and Social Outcomes of Moving to a Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Elayne Heisler, Duke University

Gary W. Evans, Cornell University

Phyllis Moen, Cornell University

Objectives

To compare the experience of moving into a continuing care retirement community for those moving locally (within the county) and from more of a distance (outside the county).

Key Findings

    • Long distance movers were more apt to experience physical health declines, while no such declines were found for local movers.
    • Health declines were not associated with changes in social integration or social support.

Implications

Changing community as well as residence may be an unrecognized risk factor for health.
