Objectives

Analyze the motivations for moving reported by a sample of movers to a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) prior to their move.

Key findings

  • Three reasons for moving were most important: 85% moved for anticipation of future needs and availability of continued care, 53% moved to end upkeep and maintenance work, and 44% moved to not be a burden to others
  • When looking for a CCRC, 60% were attracted by on-site medical and nursing care and 33% sought a location near friends and relatives and recreational and cultural activities.
  • Desirable amenities of the new CCRC were living unit design and choice, good management and no maintenance needs.
  • Cultural activities are much more important for younger movers.

Implications

Access to medical and long-term care are the primary attractions of a CCRC and the quality of these services should be emphasized by CCRC operators. Amenities and activities may be important to attract the young-old to CCRCs.
