Pathways Working Paper 00-06 Moen, P. & Erickson, M. A. (2000,
March). Decision-Making and Satisfaction with a Continuing Care Retirement
Community. (Previously #6)
Phyllis Moen, Cornell University
Mary Ann Erickson, Ithaca College
Objectives
Describe the decision strategies used by a group of movers to a new continuing care retirement community (CCRC) as well as their subsequent satisfaction.
Key findings
- Some planned little, including those who had moved frequently and those with recent health problems. Others planned a lot, including older residents and those who moved from outside the local area.
- About half of the respondents did not consider any housing option other than the one CCRC.
- Residents with a higher sense of mastery before the move tended to be more satisfied with the CCRC. Those who did not want to live in age-segregated housing tended to be less satisfied after the move.
Implications
- Not all older individuals considering a move go through an extensive search process. If new cohorts of older people have moved more frequently, this may make the decision to move to a CCRC easier.
- Many older individuals are ambivalent about living in age-segregated housing. Public activities and intergenerational activities at facilities may help to lessen this attitude.
