Pathways Working Paper #00-08 Erickson, M. A. & Kantrowitz, E. (2000, April). An Ecological Model of Residential Mobility in Later Life.

Mary Ann Erickson, Ithaca College

Elyse Kantrowitz

Objectives

Examines existing models of residential mobility in later life and proposes an integrated model using an ecological framework.

Key findings

    • Two factors are key in the decision to move - the objective fit of housing and subjective residential satisfaction.
    • Life events such as widowhood and health declines affect the fit of housing (i.e., how well the characteristics of the housing meet the needs of the individual).

Implications

Future research should look at the relative impact of fit and satisfaction on the decision to move. Better and more standard measures should be developed.
