Pathways Working Paper 01-02 Evans, G., Kantrowitz, E., & Eshelman, P. (2001, February). Housing Quality and Psychological Well-Being Among the Elderly.

Gary Evans, Cornell University

Elyse Kantrowitz

Paul Eshelman, Cornell University

Objectives

This study explores the relationship between conditions and mental health among the elderly.

Key findings

  • Elderly individuals living in poorer quality residences are less attached to their home environment and this, in turn, largely accounts for the positive correlation between housing quality and positive affect.

  • These findings are independent of multiple personal and social variables (e.g. gender, income, and home ownership).

Implications

To our knowledge, this is the first study to show a relationship between housing quality and place attachment as well as place attachment and mental health.
