Pathways Working Paper #3 Eshelman, P. E., & Evans, G. W.
(1999, February). Home Again: Environmental Predictors of Place Attachment
and Self-Esteem for New Retirement Community Residents.
Paul Eshelman, Cornell University
Gary W. Evans, Cornell University
Objectives
Demonstrate that both functional and meaningful features of the home relate to CCRC residents feelings of place attachment and self-esteem.
Key findings
- Both functional and meaningful elements of the home environment are significantly related to place attachment and self-esteem.
- CCRC residents missed functional features of their former home (storage, large kitchen, multiple bathrooms, basement or garage) and quality features such as views of nature.
- Residents like design features of their new home such as high ceilings, skylights and general brightness.
Implications
- Enriching spaces with appealing materials such as natural wood,
creating spaces for display of valued possessions, and shaping space
for unique activities are ways interior designers can create innovative
living spaces.
- Creating functional and meaningful living spaces can be beneficial
for residents of congregate housing.
