Pathways Working Paper #9 Robison, J., & Moen, P. (1999, August). A Life Course Perspective on Later Life Housing Expectations and Realities.

Julie Robison, Braceland Center for Mental Health and Aging

Phyllis Moen, Cornell University

Objectives

To examine future housing expectations and actual moves for a random sample of men and women in late midlife.

Key findings

    • The higher the level of implied dependency associated with a housing option the lower the likelihood of choice of that option (only 9% indicated interest in sharing a home with a family member, 12% in moving in a with a family member, and 7% living in an ECHO cottage).
    • Those who expect to age in place are older, rural respondents with less education and more years in their home, while those who foresee a move in the future rent their homes, have fewer ties in the community and have more symptoms of depression.

Implications

Expectations about housing options vary widely, emphasizing the necessity of providing a range of housing and long-term care options. A large proportion of Americans plan to age in place and will require access to a wide variety of community-based services.
